You can usually tell within two pages whether a solar quote is designed for your roof and your bills – or for someone else’s sales target.
A proper solar panel installation quote is not just a price. It is a design proposal, a set of assumptions about how you use energy, and a promise about what will be installed on your property and under which standards. If you are comparing quotes (or trying to work out why they differ), the details matter far more than the headline number.
What a solar panel installation quote should include
A quote worth trusting reads like a technical plan written in plain English. You should be able to see what you are buying, why it was specified, and what protections sit behind it.
At minimum, expect clarity on system size (kWp), inverter power (kW), estimated annual generation (kWh), and how those estimates were produced. You also want the panel count and model, the inverter brand and model, and whether optimisers or microinverters are included. What to look for if you want power-cut backup
Most people assume a battery automatically keeps the house on during a power cut. In many standard configurations, it does not.
If backup is important to you, the quote needs to specify backup capability and the method used: for example, a gateway or backup box, what circuits are backed up, and what the expected power limits are in outage mode. Some homes choose whole-home backup, others back up a dedicated “essential loads” board (lights, broadband, fridge, a few sockets).

Solar should feel boring from a compliance point of view. That is a compliment.
